Fleece is everywhere! Blankets, scarves, gloves, robes, hats - this fabric has
become a favorite for keeping warm during the cold months of winter. It's very easy to sew since the edges don't ravel.
Fleece is available in a myriad of fun patterns as well as solid
colors. Better quality fleece will be labeled as "anti-pill". Fleece
blankets can be cut up and converted into hats for the whole family.
These hats make great gifts plus are a wonderful, personal way to
contribute to a cold-weather clothing charity drive.
How to Make a Fleece Hat
You can make this hat in less than 30 minutes!
5/8 yard fleece fabric
coordinating thread
1. Cut a 20" by 18" square from fleece. (This is for the "average"
adult head. Adjust first number according to head measurement plus 1/2"
for seam allowance. For small children, adjust width and height.) The
width of the rectangle should correspond with the stretch of the
fabric. ALSO, cut a 1/2 inch by 14 inch strip and set aside (the 14
inch length should NOT stretch.)
2. Fold piece in half, right sides together, making a rectangle that is 10" by 18". Pin fabric edges together.
3. Stitch seam with a zig-zag stitch, close to edges, from bottom edge to 5 inches below top edge.
4. Turn right side out. Use a 1/8 inch seam allowance and stitch from
lower edge for 5 inches (this creates a French seam to hide stitching
when you turn up the cuff.)
5. Turn up lower edge about 3/8 inch and pin in place. Stitch 1/4 inch away from fold.
6.
Turn inside out. Cut top section into fringed pieces - about 1/2 inch
wide and 5 inches long (corresponding with unstitched side seam).
7. Turn right side in. Bunch fabric together just below fringe. Use
extra cut strip to tie fabric together. Cinch it well and tie twice.
Trim strip to match other fringe pieces.
8. Turn up bottom cuff, 4-5 inches, and tack in place at back seam and at sides, if desired.
